The term sciatica refers to pain experience from irritation of the sciatic nerve. Whilst this can often be caused by a trapped sciatic nerve, it can also be caused by compression.

Symptoms are usually pain that spreads from the lower back through to one or both legs. This is sometimes accompanied by a loss of sensation or feeling of weakness in the affected area.

Home Treatments that work

If the pain is mild, there are a range of treatments that are likely to be effective in your own home. These include:-

Anti Inflammatory Drugs

Simple over-the-counter anti inflammatory drugs can be effective, These include aspirin and ibuprofen, but ask your pharmacist for their advice.

Chiropractor

A chiropractor will be able to assess what is causing the pain you are experiencing. If you prefer a drug free option, then a visit to a chiropractic clinic may be worthwhile.

Your treatment may include a range of therapies including spinal manipulation, ice therapy, ultrasound or TENS.

Exercise

Carrying out some simple exercises has been shown to increase flexibility and reduce likelihood of recurrence. In particular, whats known as the McKenzie exercises have been shown to be particularly effective, if carried out over a period of time.

Exercising can also build strength in the affected areas and address the causes of sciatica.

Ice Therapy

If applied within the first 48 hours, this has been shown to slow inflammation and reduce swelling.

Apply ice, wrapped in a towel, for up to 20 minutes to the affected area can help healing and improve movement.

Rest

Surprisingly, lying in bed for long periods is not recommendd. A little activity is thought to help, whilst complete inactivity can increase your symptoms.

Whilst some rest if advisable, do get out of bed and walk around as long as the pain is not too intense.

For chronic or severe pain, consult your doctor who will be able to recommend stronger pain relief alternatives.

Remember, its important to seek medical advice if youre suffering from sciatica, as it can also be one of the symptoms of other health problems and disorders.
