Consistent check up and monitoring

Just like in the other types of air filters, regular once a month check-up of your return air filters is required to make sure that your heating and cooling systems are running properly. Doing such task may be troublesome. Perhaps making yourself check the filters each time you receive your monthly electric bill should do the trick for you.

Note that filters wear out different. Pleated filters for instance, can last up to three months, whereas fibreglass filters should be replaced monthly. Whatever the case may be, it is highly recommended that return air filters are free from any form of obstructions, such as clothing, curtains, or furniture. This is simply because the dirt or dust that may have been accumulated in these materials can hinder smooth airflow, resulting for the heating and cooling system to work harder. If you do not want some unnecessary expenses to come, it is best to remove anything that blocks your filter.

Remember that a clogged filter results to a 10% increases in your operating cost. An even more serious threat is that neglected dirty filters can actually cause you permanent damage for your heating and cooling systems.

Doing maintenance properly

Regular monitoring and check up may be troublesome, but can be rewarding in the end. Would you rather pay some extra amount of money than by simply doing tasks required? You definitely not want this happening to you. Below are simple maintenance routines that you can follow for your air filters.

1. You can begin by removing the air filter.

2. Assuming that you have two elements, have the inner and outer elements separated.

3. Immerse the individual element in a container with cleaning solvent. Wash it.

4. Try squeezing the element to thoroughly remove some excess solvent. Be careful not to overdo the squeezing to avoid the element from any crack or rip.

5. Gently wash the element with warm soapy water. Remove as much dirt as you possibly can.

6. Rinse thoroughly the element and squeeze to get rid of excess water.

7. Inspect carefully for possible cracks or tears in the seams or foam. If damaged, then replace the elements.

8. Hang the elements to dry completely.

9. Re-oil the elements once dried out. Try to remove excess oil by careful squeezing of the elements.

10. Reinstall back the filter elements. A thin coat of grease can be applied to the sealing surface of the equipment before placing it back.
