How to Improve Link Popularity Using Articles

Posted on August 28th, 2008 in Search Engine Optimization

There are probably a thousand and one ways to improve link popularity for your website so that it can rank well in the search engines. Many come and go but article marketing and content publishing still remains effective even till today. The search engines exist for content and this fact is not about to change. Articles and content work by attracting targeted traffic, get more links to your website and help your site rank well in the search engines.

Quite simply, your article has to be relevant to the theme of your website. It has to contain the right keywords, both in the article title as well as the content for the purpose of keyword targeting and SEO. While doing so, do pay attention to creating content that provides useful information to your potential readers.

Creating a good article can improve your link popularity when your visitors bookmark your site at the social bookmarking sites. They may even mention your website to their friends or for that matter share with their subscribers. It is possible that they even publish your article on their websites and credit you with a backlink to your website.

From what we can see, writing good articles is the way to go. Imaging having more articles published and indexed in the major search engines. This can bring you a lot of traffic. In each article that is submitted, be sure to set up the author resource box correctly. Make sure the link to your website is working properly. It helps also to include a statement giving your readers the right to reprint or publish your article on their sites provided nothing is changed. Each publisher who decides to post your article on their high PR site means one more powerful link to your website.

Where do you submit the articles to? Article directories are the places where you want to post them to improve link popularity. These are free to submit and just one article can make a whole lot of difference to your web traffic. Due to time constraint, you may not be able to optimize the whole traffic building process by submitting to hundreds of article directories.

If time is a problem to you, target only the best ones that are highly favored by the search engines like EzineArticles, GoArticles and ArticleBase. There are others which are worth considering also. Once again, do not forget to place your website link at the author resource box. Otherwise, your article posting becomes worthless and will not help to improve link popularity at all.

Articles that are well written can be used for other purposes as well to improve link popularity. They can be used as content for newsletters and ebooks. On the overall, writing an article for submission remains a great way to drive more traffic to your site.

Using Your Local Community To Build Your Small Business On The Web

Posted on August 26th, 2008 in Search Engine Optimization

For a Local company one of the biggest aspects of SEO is getting people in your community to link to you. Almost everyone has an online page of some sort whether it is through MySpace or an actual website. Your friends want you to succeed and so will often be willing to place a link to your site somewhere in their page, along with some words about what you do. This last point the text being about what you do is important because the incoming links help more if they are surrounded by information that relates to your website. Without this information the relevance of the links goes down.

One thing that sets Washington apart is how wired it is, there are many more people online here then any other part of the country, what’s more it is the most literate part of the United States as well. For these reasons various forms of online PR and article marketing are likely to do very well for getting people in the local community to link to your site, especially if you have something on your site of interest to link to. Having something to link to is important, almost everyone has a website but very few people have enough incoming links to get a good position. In order to get a good position it is important that you create unique content, content that will make people who see your site want to link to you. In a small community it may be more important to get local sites to link to you, as these will allow you to look more important to the search engines local based searches.

Having content on your website that is worth linking to may be easier then you think (depending on what you do). Small businesses owners like you have a wealth of knowledge that people are often looking for. The use of tools in hardware, paint color schemes that are popular, clothing styles that are unique, information on books and authors. All of these things are pieces of information that you as a small business owner can have special access to, and so can place on your website.

For a restaurant it may be even easier to provide something worth linking to in the form of recipes. People love recipes and so by providing some you stand a good chance of gaining incoming links.

Another way to get incoming links is to join the organizations in your local community; your chamber of commerce for example could provide a good link to your site. A school in your area could also provide a link to your website if you made a donation related to your business or where on something which they organized. By the same little leagues and other such entities will often link to donors, so you can ask about this. In all cases remember that it is best to get these links in such a way that discusses your business.

Remember also as you go out to get these links however that you don’t want to do it too fast. It is advisable not to get more then 2 or 3 links a week and maybe even less, because Google will punish you if you get more. In a local community this is also easier to control because you can ask people to wait to link to you if necessary.

Blogs And Search Engine Ranking - How To Get To The Top

Posted on August 26th, 2008 in Search Engine Optimization

It is generally easier to improve search engine rankings for a dynamic blog than it is for static website pages. Blogs and blog posts are liked by search engines because they are frequently updated with new content, they are rich in text and links , and they tend not to have complicated HTML.

Optimizing a blog to improve search engine rankings is similar to optimizing a

website, and optimizing a blog post is similar to optimizing a single web page.

By using the following tips and techniques, you can achieve an impressive search

engine ranking for your blog.

1) Ensure that your blog can be easily spidered by the search engines. ‘Spidering’

refers to the process by which search engine software robots crawl web pages. A

navigation sidebar should be present on all pages of your blog. You also want

your previous blog posts to be accessible from each page of your blog so

that they can be spidered easily.

2) Obtain links from other blogs and websites. Links

pointing to your blog or blog posts are vital to improve search engine rankings.

These backlinks should come from websites and blogs dealing with similar topics

to your blog ie. they should be related in some way to your blog. To get

high-quality links back to your blog, submit your blog and RSS feed to blog

search engines. Blogs based on similar themes are often willing to exchange

links with other blogs which creates blog networks. Some bloggers use ‘trackbacks’

to build links( a trackback is a form of communication between blogs).

3) Frequently update your blog content. Search engines love

fresh content. Make regular posts to your blogs in order to improve your search

engine ranking.

4) Include your primary keyword in your blog’s URL. Your

domain or subdomain should include the main keyword that you want to optimize

your blog for. If you are wanting to brand yourself or your business, consider

including your name or the name of your company in the domain.

5) Place your main keyword phrase in both blog header meta

tags as well as in the title of your blog posts. For example, if you are

trying to optimize your blog for the keyword phrase ‘natural asthma remedies’,

make sure this phrase appears in title of each of your blog posts as well as in

your H1 or H2 meta tags.

6) Don’t forget to include your keywords in the anchor text links if you are linking to other pages in your website or to other blog posts. Linking your blog to your website is a great way of generating

quality traffic.

7) Place your other keywords in the body text of your blog posts as well

as intermittently in your article titles and links. Don’t overuse keywords in

your text as your posts will tend not to make sense and they won’t read well.

8) If you change the domain name and hosting for your blog,

you run the risk of losing loyal visitors, traffic and search engine ranking. If

possible, keep the same blog domain and host.

By using these simple, yet effective blog optimization

techniques, you too can achieve a top search engine ranking for your blog. Only

once you have done this, can your blog start reaching its true profit potential.

Seven Tips for Writing Your Own Articles

Posted on August 26th, 2008 in Search Engine Optimization

Most high-ranking websites can attribute at least part of their success to
excellent content. Informative, well-written articles generate reader
interest, position you as an expert in the field, and encourage readers to
link to you and share the valuable information you offer-all of which can
give your business a big boost. If you’re thinking of building your article
library on your own, here are a few tips for writing great online articles.

Use catchy titles. The title should promise a benefit from reading the
article-it should basically be a one-sentence summary of what the reader
will learn. If you’re not good at coming up with catchy one-liners, there’s
an easier way to write eye-grabbing titles: just include a number.

Something like “Seven Steps to a Greener Garden” is a better title than “How
to Grow a Greener Garden” because it’s more specific and concrete-the fact
that there are only seven steps means that the tips will be concise and easy
to understand, and the reader is more likely to take a few minutes to read
further. Some studies have shown that odd numbers work better than even
ones, because they sound less polished and more authentic.

Use bullets, lists, or subheadings. These keep your article organized and
make it easier for readers to skim. Online readers are rushed, and tend to
avoid big blocks of text. Break things up with subheadings, bullet points,
and concise paragraphs, and they’ll be able to find the information they’re
looking for more quickly.

Keep it brief. Five to eight hundred words is about the optimum length for
most web articles. Any longer than that, and most readers won’t stick with
it till the end. If you have more to say than will fit in a one-page
article, consider breaking up the article into parts I, II, and III.

Get your facts from more than one source. If you’re writing on a topic you
know well, you may not have to do any research. But if you do need to look
up a few things, make sure you get your facts from more than one
source-especially if you depend on the Internet for your research. This
keeps your article from repeating false facts, and it also keeps it from
parroting a single source.

Easy on the keywords. If your articles are for SEO purposes, it can be
tempting to stuff them full of keywords. But to really get the most out of
your articles, they need to be written with human beings in mind. Any more
than a 2% density, and readers will start to notice those keywords-and once
they do, they’ll move on in a hurry. Your readers are the ones who’ll be
spending the money on your site, so make sure your articles are written with
them in mind.

Pick relevant topics. This should be obvious, but you’d be surprised how
many web authors don’t. Make sure you pick article topics your customers are
interested in, and that further the purposes of your business. If you run a
landscaping business, write articles on landscaping topics-not on beekeeping
or stationary biking or the best holiday destinations in the Lake District,
unless these topics apply somehow to landscaping. The goal of these articles
is to give you expert credibility, not include customers in your private
life and thoughts or promote your friend’s business, unless it has something
to do with yours.

Copying from other sites? Don’t even think about it. You may be tempted to
amass hundreds of articles at one go-by copying from other sites. Don’t do
it. Major search engines penalize websites with duplicate content, so doing
this could actually hurt your rankings. In addition, it could get you in
trouble with the owner of the articles. At best, you’ll be asked to take the
articles down. At worst, you could get into legal trouble for copyright
infringement.

There’s been some hype lately about content generators, or software that
rewords content so that it’s unique. These don’t work very well-the content
that comes out is often nonsensical. For best results, don’t try to build
your content all in one go. It takes time to write a good content library,
but it’s worth it in the end to do it right.

The Value of Gaining Organic Rankings

Posted on August 25th, 2008 in Search Engine Optimization

The value of gaining organic rankings for your website is assumed to be a good think in practically any marketing piece you read. As with any assumption, you should ask yourself why this is exactly.

The more internet marketing articles you read, the more you come to understand there is a lot of bias involved in the industry. People in the industry are simply hell bent on their particular position. Those that love pay-per-click placement will defend it to the death. The same goes for supporters of email marketing, search engine optimization and practically any other form of online marketing out there. In truth, each form of marketing has its pluses and minuses.

The value of gaining organic rankings is found in the long term effect. What does this mean? Well, it means that once you have the rankings you are after, those positions will continually produce traffic to your site, monetary transactions and profits so long as you undertake the basic steps to maintain them. Let’s look at an example.

Assume I have a site selling remote car starters. The remotes allow you to fire up the engine of your car before getting in, which is nice if it is raining or you are in a bad situation. Regardless, I obviously want to get ranked under keyword phrases that people use to search for these starters. My keyword research shows there are two thousand searches a day for “remote car starters”, which tells me this is a good phrase to go for.

I begin pursuing my search engine optimization effort. After a year, I move up to number three in the rankings on Google for my keyword phrase. Yes! I start receiving roughly 1,000 visits to my site each day. I convert these visits and 1 in 100 visitors thus making 10 sales a day. My profit per sale is $40 on average, so I make $400 a day or $12,000 a month.

Now, the real value of gaining organic rankings is in the long term effect as mentioned previously. If I make a reasonable effort to maintain this ranking, I should match this earning rate every day this month…this year…next year…and so on. There may be seasonal fluctuations when sales go way up [Christmas] or possibly down during a slow part of the year, but this ranking should consistently produce revenue on average for as long as I maintain it. This is the value of gaining organic rankings.

As a person providing SEO services, this is the part of the article where I should badmouth other marketing mediums. Well, I am not. They all have their place. SEO is the best in my opinion, but it has its downsides. The biggest is the fact it takes time for the rankings to occur. It can take almost a year for Google to get around to ranking a site, and that is a long time to wait. Pursuing other forms of advertising during this period makes sense.

A Return to Keyword Research

Posted on August 25th, 2008 in Search Engine Optimization

Keyword research is often discussed as something that is critical, but can be a bit grueling. In truth, it should excite you. It represents the identification of potential profitable business areas.

While doing keyword research is absolutely a critical step to any online marketing effort, most people make a major mistake when pursuing it. What is the mistake? They view the research as a one time event. In truth, you should return to your keyword research at regular intervals.

Let’s look an extreme example. Assume I am opening a site selling bathing suits. Further assume I do my keyword research in late October. What am I going to find? Well, there are always going to a certain number of searches regarding just about any subject at any point in the calendar year. The data in this case, however, is clearly going to be compromised by the fact a majority of my potential customers are simply not looking for bathing suits in October. It’s a bit chilly!

It goes without saying that a far better time to perform the keyword research for my site would be in spring and summer. Ah, but I need to launch my site in October. This conundrum raises a basic fundamental lesson of keyword research. You should be doing it at least quarterly or more often. Why? Well, each season presents a different set of data regarding what your customers are searching for.

For instance, the data I derive from my keyword research in January and May will be entirely different. This is because the perspectives of my buyers are going to be different. The January data will reflect customers that were searching for bathing suits as gifts for other in November and December. The May data will reflect the perspective of people looking for bathing suits for themselves. The keyword phrases from both sets of data will have some common themes, but also a significant number of unique phrases that can be mined for top rankings and leads.

At the end of the day, it is important to remember that keyword research is not a “one and done” task. It is an ever evolving area that reflects the continually changing interests of your prospects. Stay on top of it to stay on top of them.

The Next Invasion?

Posted on August 24th, 2008 in Search Engine Optimization

After Microsoft’s glitchy update to Service Pack 2
(which as of this writing I still have yet to
download), I prefer things to be out there and
bug fr’ee by the time I put them on my hard drive.

However, the latest and greatest appears to be Google’s
attempt to “help you” find stuff online and inside
your own hard drive. They are preparing to release
a “desktop helper” program (maybe the beta is out
at the time of this writing?).

This program promises to search everything you’ve
done and everywhere you’ve gone online, along with
everything you’ve stored on your computer.

Their reasoning?

To make it “easier” for you to recall and retrieve
obscure and not so obscure information (are the
alarm bells ringing for you yet?).

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Windows
(any variation) already have a full search capability?
Redundant question because, of course, the answer
is a resounding… Yes!

And your Windows search even hunts out all those
stray places where you may have parked anything and
everything yet forgotten where.

I am not an authority on this new “helper” tool of
Googles, far from it, but when I read a recent article
this morning in the New York Times, bells began going
off - fairly alarming ones at that.

I run no less than a solid firewall, an outstanding
antivirus program (Norton) and three (count ‘em three)
sp’yware programs.

Based on this I will tell you that whenever I break
down and reinstall the Google search bar for even
short amounts of time, my sp’yware detection programs
go absolutely nuts!

On the opposite end of the scale, Yahoo’s toolbar
rings no bells or whistles when scanned. Yahoo says it
doesn’t peek and snoop, and not being a programmer
myself I do place a lot of stock in the returns and
tri’ggers of all my “protect me and my computer”
programs. I conclude for myself that Yahoo is indeed
telling the truth. I use Yahoo’s toolbar all the time.
I like my privacy.

I’m betting dollars to donuts that letting Google
have access to everything on and off your computer
is going to be “interesting” if not downright
alarming, and most computer users won’t have a clue
or fully understand what they are allowing.

Heck, most computer users don’t even run a proper
vi’rus detection system and/or keep it updated on
a weekly (or more often) basis.

While this latest “helper” may indeed turn out to
be the “next best thing since sliced bread,” I’d
advise caution. Don’t be one of the first to
rush out and get this, play it smart.

Giving access to any program (other than firewalls
and antivirus programs) to everything and every
area on your computer is flirting with danger
in my book.

[Remember... You've got to invite the vampire in
willingly or he/she cannot come into your house -
or computer in this case.]

You’ll have to decide for yourself. Me… I’m
most certainly waiting and IF I ever test it out
you can bet it’s running through all three of
my sp’yware programs, along with a good Norton
virus scan first.

SEARCH is available under your START menu, and
your bookmarks and/or favorites folder plus
your history in the IE browser itself should be
more than sufficient (it’s what we’ve all been
doing for a long, long time just fine) for the
time being.

My advice? Let others be the guinea pigs of the
world for you… if they must…

Search Engine Optimization for Affiliates

Posted on August 24th, 2008 in Search Engine Optimization

Organic search engine optimization is a process that involves analysis of your websites structure, code, content, links and tags. Based upon the current algorithms used by the major spider-based search engines, such as Google, changes and enhancements are made to your site in order to push your site up in the rankings and deliver it earlier in the search results delivered by the engine. For your site to rank in the first page or two of sites delivered in a search, its pretty much essential to use optimization software or a consulting service that keeps up-to-date on this fast changing industry.

So what will they do for you? Constantly monitor and adjust, things you dont have time to do if youre going to be marketing and advertising your site, adding content, blogging, creating partnerships and adding other merchants. By collecting site data and analyzing a huge number of sites, they identify patterns in the way pages are evaluated and achieve rankings. They understand the changes in the algorithms used by the major search engines. Your site and others receive continual reviews and updates, and changes in statistics are monitored.

These companies will identify the keywords that will bring buyers to your site. They will take care of submitting the pages of your site to the major search engines and online directories. They can also advise you and make changes to your linking, as links to other quality sites will help your ranking by the search engines. Because they see how so many sites rank, some can also help you in increasing the usability of your site and use and placement of ads, and merchant links. They may be able to advise you about reducing your drop-off rate (those who dont buy) or conversion rate (those who click to a merchant and buy).

Its an option worth real consideration you need to monetize your site to the best of your ability, and cant do everything. Theres no sense in doing all the work related to maintaining a site and having nobody find you.
