Back Pain Warning Signs

Posted on August 28th, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

Back Pain Warning Signs The prevalence of back pain in our country often leads people to dismiss back problems as something that they just must learn to live with. We have a tendency to reach for whatever over-the-counter pain reliever is in the medicine cabinet and go about our daily business.

Often times, back pain is no cause for concern and a trip to the doctor unnecessary. However, in some cases back pain can signal a serious problem. Here are six fairly common back pain problems that are worthy of a call to the doctor:

Anytime you have severe back pain that lasts for more than three weeks, you should seek the help of a medical professional. While pain will often disappear with time and self treatment, persistent pain should be considered a warning sign and should never be ignored.

If you experience persistent and severe low back pain that extends down your leg, it could be a sign of a compressed nerve. If the pain increases when you raise your knee to your chest or if you bend over, chances are that a disc is irritating the nerve, and you should seek medical attention.

Persistent non-specific symptoms such as low back and buttocks pain, numbness, tingling, muscle tightness or weakness in the leg that is often aggravated by standing, walking and other activities could all be signs of a condition known as Spondylolsthesis, which occurs when a cracked spinal vertebrae slips forward over the vertebrae below it. Medical attention is required and there is an array of possible treatments available.

Numbness or weakness in the legs while walking can be caused by a narrowing of the spinal canal. This is called Spinal Stenosis, a condition that requires medical attention.

If you have significant back pain after a fall, you may have injured your spine in some way, and a visit to the doctor is definitely in order. Individuals with osteoporosis should be particularly aware, as they are at an even greater risk of causing damage to the spine after a fall.

Back pain that worsens during the night and is accompanied by a fever may be a sign of infection or some other type of problem and is worthy of medical attention.

Tips for Choosing a Mattress

Posted on August 27th, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

Unfortunately, many people lose a good nights sleep all because of the mattress on which they sleep. If you find you wake feeling tired or sore, that you have difficulty falling asleep, or toss and turn throughout the night, the problem could very well be your mattress. The truth is that a restless night will result in a miserable day, making it difficult to concentrate and function at full capacity. While the mattress could be the problem, it is important that you consider a number of factors when buying to ensure you end up with the right mattress.

The proper mattress will make you feel rested and rejuvenated. Making a choice on a mattress can be difficult. One of the first things you need to do is educate yourself on mattress types. To help you with the process, we have provided some helpful information to consider.

 Latex Foam The primary benefit to a latex foam mattress is that the pressure of the body is distributed evenly. This means you never experience pain from pressure points, allowing you to enjoy a deep, restful sleep. Typically, people who suffer from sleep disorders or back problems would find the latex foam mattress one of the better options.

 Adjustable Bed Many physical conditions including spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and degenerative spondylolisthesis would benefit most from an adjustable bed mattress. With this option, you can adjust the position of the mattress, helping you find the most comfortable position for sleeping. Although usually high priced, adjustable bed mattresses offer various head and feet elevations depending on specific need.

 Spring The spring mattress is probably one of the most common and affordable types. Some of the newer styles on the market are excellent but one of the primary issues is that the springs are not very forgiving. For this reason, we strongly recommend you choose the best you can afford to ensure high quality.

 Sleep Number One of the newer types of mattresses on the market, the sleep number is divided into two sides, allowing each person to adjust the firmness according to personal preference. For instance, a firm mattress of 85 might be perfect for one person while the individual on the other side of the mattress likes a 25 setting, which is much softer.

Generally, a mattress of any kind is rated by firmness firm, plush, and pillow top. For the best back support, you would want the firm mattress. A plush mattress can also be firm but provide a little more give while a pillow top offers the most comfort and give.

In addition, you want to consider the warranty of the mattress. Since mattresses are expensive, you want to ensure you purchase a mattress set that will provide you with a minimum of five years support and comfort.

When shopping around for mattresses, we recommend you visit a number of manufacturers, actually lying down on the mattresses to test them out. This way, you would have a better feel according to your body. Once you find a specific type of mattress you like best, you could then shop online or through discount stores to find better prices.

Breakthrough In Sciatica Symptom Relief

Posted on August 26th, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

Sciatica symptom relief has often been hit and miss, but a new treatment option provides effective relief in the majority of cases with minimal risks.

Sciatica (commonly misspelled as syatica) is an irritation of the sciatic nerve which is formed by nerves that arise in the low back. Most cases of sciatica are caused by herniations or bulges of one or more spinal discs. The spinal discs are soft tissue structures that separate the spinal bones (the vertebrae) and act as shock absorbers.

When a disc becomes damaged, the cartilage wall on the outside of the disc may be too weak to fully withstand the pressure coming from inside the disc, and the result is a protrusion of the disc into the passageways where the nerves branch off from the spinal cord and exit the spine. This places pressure on the nerves and creates pain, often in the form of sciatica, which begins in the buttock area and may extend down the leg towards the foot.

The treatment options for sciatica symptom relief vary depending on the case. Medication is usually the first line of treatment for sciatica symptom relief. Muscle relaxers may also be prescribed to reduce muscle spasm. Medication may be effective enough to provide relief short-term until inflammation subsides and/or the disc stabilizes. In more severe cases, oral medication may not be effective, and some patients may not be able to tolerate the common side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs and/or the diminished mental alertness seen with pain killers and muscle relaxers.

Steroid injections are often the next line of sciatica symptom relief treatment, and they are used to try to reduce inflammation around the discs and spinal nerves. While steroid injections often provide relief short-term, the long-term effects are less favorable. Due to the fact that the main effect of steroid injections is to reduce inflammation, once those effects wear off, inflammation and the resulting pressure on the nerves often builds up again, and symptoms return. Steroid injections also carry side-effects that include immune suppression, osteoporosis, and soft tissue damage, so their use must be limited to prevent causing other health problems.

Surgical treatment is often suggested for sciatica sufferers, and in a few cases it may be the only real option. The overall success rate of disc surgery is poor - about 50% - and in a relatively high number of cases the symptoms actually get worse after surgery resulting in what is known as “failed back surgery syndrome”. Complications of surgery include problems from post-surgical scar tissue formation and increased stress on adjacent spinal discs which may result in additional problems with other discs in the years following surgery.

Fortunately, there is a new option in sciatica symptom relief that has a high success rate and a very low risk of side-effects. Spinal decompression is a new, advanced form of spinal traction that uses special computerized traction motors to gently and slowly apply a decompressive force to the spine, reducing pressure in the spinal discs. Spinal decompression systems can comfortably create negative pressure (suction) within the spinal discs that can pull disc bulges and herniations back in and away from sensitive nerve structures, as well as increase disc hydration and nutrition to help with disc healing. Unlike the old forms of spinal traction which could be painful due to the traction pull triggering muscle spasm, spinal decompression systems monitor and respond to the body to keep muscles relaxed so the treatment is comfortable and effective.

Preliminary studies have shown a success rate for spinal decompression of 80 to 90%, with the beneficial effects holding up well over the long-term. The one-year recurrence rate post-treatment is less than 5%. While spinal decompression is not appropriate for everyone with sciatica and is not effective in every case, it does represent a big improvement in sciatica treatment.

Dr. George Best has been treating sciatica patients since 1992. For more information about sciatica, spinal decompression and other treatment options, please visit Sciatica Symptom Relief.

Simple Home Treatments For Back Pains

Posted on August 26th, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

Just as the brain is the command centre for the human body, the spine is its powerhouse without which it cannot work. And just like a workshop, it too can fail to work properly if as a whole or part of it suffers a breakdown.

The Spine or rather The Back is a combination of cartilage, nerves and muscle and a small injury to any of these can make a person physically disabled. Back pains usually occur at the lower back area, an area that literally supports the weight of the whole body.

Back pains often result from either overstretched muscles or ligaments, which are tissues, and like muscles, connect vital body parts together. Since the back is a crucial part of the human body, hence, any injury whether minor or major will produce a severe pain to it.

Although, there are various options for treating back pains including that of taking costly medications or in extreme cases having back-surgery. But according to doctors and chiropractors, about seventy to ninety percent of back pain diminishes within two to six weeks, either by itself or just by simply applying certain home-based remedies.

Below are some simple home-based remedies which when used properly, will guarantee relief from pain within days.

Avoid extensive bed rest:

The old adage that proper bed rest will cure all pains, well that isnt effective any more. Research has proven that extensive bed rest during bad backs will only aggravate the pain and not reduce it.

Instead going about your daily life will not only take your mind off the pain but will also help speed up recovery. But remember this do not overdo it.

Use an ice pack:

If the affected area is swollen, then put some ice on it. Cold or rather ice, slows down inflammation and swelling; it numbs the tissue and hence reduces nerves signals to the injured area.

Take a hot bath:

usually after a day or two of using the ice pack, take a hot bath or a shower to further relax the muscles in the affected part and it will ease the pain. If you do not wish to take a bath, then a hot towel, a heat lamp or even a heating pad will do the trick.

Pop a pill:

And then there are the pills. Over the counter pills like aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help relieve pain. But then like all medications these should be taken only after getting the clear either from your GP or local pharmacist as they will be able to guide you properly as which medicine is best for you.

Though, these home-based remedies will surely help to alleviate pain but if not after a few days, then it is advisable to contact your doctor or chiropractor for further action.

Treatments and Remedies for Relieving Pain

Posted on August 26th, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

Acupuncture traditional Chinese medicine had lost its footing when modern medicine took over. However, it was later found out that traditional Chinese medicine such as acupuncture was more effective in treating ailments including pain. A study conducted at Sheffield University in the United Kingdom found out that a group of patients who received acupuncture treatment significantly reduced pain after one year compared to the group that received usual care after. The same acupuncture treatment group had likely claimed that they did not experience pain on the second year.

Posture Slouching is when you drop your shoulder forward and your head downward. The tendency is for your back to work extra just to maintain your balance. As a result, it puts pressure on your vertebrae, which will likely cause your back to ache. Stop slouching and start to stand and seat straight. This will not only make your look good, it will also make you feel good.

Massage Therapy Massage helps relieve back pain, shin splints, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel type symptoms, neck stiffness, sciatica, bursitis, headaches, tennis elbow, and low back stiffness by treating trigger points. Trigger points are accretions of waste products in the region of a nerve receptor which manifest themselves in the forms of dull ache, hot or cold, harp pain, pins and needles, and tingling among others.

Exercise Your bones should carry your weight. But if your weight exceeds the carrying capacity, then you should be feeling pain right now. There are certain exercises that strengthen the bones. Meanwhile, loosing weight is another way to relieve the stress on your bone. People who are either obese or overweight and experiencing pain might not realize that the main contributor to the pain they feel is their weight.

Sleeping position the best way to sleep is on your side with your knees bend with a pillow between your legs. For pregnant women who experience back pain, sleeping on the side would be the best remedy for it. Place a pillow under your abdomen to support its weight.

Hot and cold back pain can be alleviated by applying cold pack at their back. Other people find heat to be a source of relief. A combination of either hot or cold and massage would also work for other people. Trying out any of these would not do you harm so feel free to explore the possibilities of finding relief to either of them.

Back And Leg Pain - Get It Treated By Exercising

Posted on August 24th, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

Back and leg pain sends messages to the brain through the spinal cord. Medtronic Pain Therapies block these pain signals. You may have chronic pain if your back and leg pain has lasted more than six months and is not relieved by medical or surgical care. Chronic pain may result from a previous injury long since healed.

It is estimated that 10% to 25% of the U.S. population or as many as 70 million people are affected by chronic back and leg pain. It disables more people than cancer or heart disease and costs the American people more than both combined.

Chronic back and leg pain is described as pain that is felt in the back and/or leg that may result from spinal diseases including Arachnoiditis, Degenerative disc disease, Epidural fibrosis, Failed back syndrome, Lumbar disc Herniation, Osteoporosis, and Spinal stenosis. Back pain is often located in the lower back, but it may extend to other areas, such as the thighs, calves, and feet.

Affected areas may feel tender or sore to the touch, and the pain may increase with movement. This type of pain can be felt as sharp or knife-like pain, a burning sensation, or as a dull muscular ache. Symptoms can range from mildly uncomfortable to completely disabling.

If you have been diagnosed with this type of pain, talk to your doctor to determine what kinds of treatment would work for you. Your doctor will put you through a selection process to determine which treatments may benefit you. Results vary as not every result is the same. Your treatment should also include exercise; if not much, at any rate minimal exercise is important.

Research shows that the chance of people with chronic pain becoming addicted to pain-relieving drugs is extremely small. When taken properly for pain, drugs can relieve pain without addiction. Needing to take medication to control your pain is not addiction.

Because there are many new ways to treat pain, it is important that you speak openly with your doctor or with a doctor who specializes in treating chronic pain. Pain costs an estimated $50 billion a year in medical costs, lost working days, and workers compensation.

Some of the Many Causes For Low Back Pain in Women

Posted on August 24th, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

According to medical studies, almost half of women in the age group of 45-64 and a third in the age group ranging from 16 years to 24 years, suffer either from upper or lower back pain. Often the lower back pain sufferers are in greater proportion then those suffering from upper back pain.

Generally, there are many causes for low back pain in women, but the biggest single source is pregnancy. It is said that 2 in every 3 women will suffer lower back pain in either their eighth or ninth month of pregnancy. And it is easier to understand why.

As a baby grows inside the uterus, it expands outwards. In order to counter that outward or forward push, women naturally tend to pull themselves back. This forced push in the opposite direction not only causes immense strain on their backbones, but also stretches their abdominal muscles, hence, lower back pain ensues.

But then there are other many causes of low back pain women. Some of these are:

After pregnancy, probably, weight is the second biggest reason for lower back pain in women. Excess weight causes pressure on the spine due to which women especially those who choose to stay at home suffer from low back pain.

Menstruation cycle is yet another main cause for back pain in women.

Women who are stay-at-home moms, especially with younger children, suffer back pain. With constant baby care, they tend to develop acute lower back pain over time. There are certain professions in which women workers suffer back pains in greater numbers than those working in other professions. These professions are health, retailing, banking, insurance and the hospitality industry.Of all the professional women, (female) nurses suffer the most. Every year thousands of them drop out of work due to constant back pain. Then in second position are those who work in clerical positions. With constant sitting, sometimes up to three to four hours at a stretch cause immense low back pain.

Housework is another major cause for low back pain in women: With constant cleaning, washing clothes and dishes, it is only natural that over a period of time, they develop a constant annoying aching back. And last but not least, there is this fashion thing. Doctors constant remind their female patients against wearing high heels as they cause immense strain on their pelvic areas, which in turn affects their backs. Tight clothes, especially tight pants also cause strain on their lower backs.

Attract New Chiropractic Patients by Educating Your Friends and Family

Posted on August 24th, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

When opening a private practice the number one way, and best way, to generate new patients is by word of mouth. During my first year in practice word of mouth brought in more new patients than any other venue we used. Ask yourself, would you prefer to pick your dentist thumbing through the phone book, or would you rather visit a dentist you have heard great things about from a friend or family member. While a phone book listing or ad may not be a bad idea, a personal referral from someone who knows you is far more superior. Your first resource to getting word of mouth referrals when opening a new practice is by educating your friends and family. Remember they are the beginning and sometimes the foundation for your network.

Due to the fact that less than 25% of the population is currently under chiropractic care, many people do not understand the complete benefits of going to the chiropractor. Do not make the mistake of letting your friends and family think that you are only a back doctor. This will limit the amount of people they are able to reach for you and your practice. If someone in your network doesnt know that you can help a potential patient with carpal tunnel syndrome then they will never be able to tell others how easily you can help. A simple way to put it to your friends, family and patients is, If it is a muscle or a joint think of me.

Once your friends and family know who you can help they can refer you patients. Once the patients are in your office it is again up to you to educate them. Every patient in your practice should know every condition you can help with. By literature, word of mouth or constant reminders let your patients know how you can help them, their loved ones and acquaintances. I will never forget one patient I treated during my internship at Parker College of Chiropractic. He was a 47 year-old doctor of veterinary medicine with chronic low back pain. Seven weeks into our treatment plan he asked me one afternoon, Can chiropractic treatments help migraines? I said, Yes, why do you ask? He then began to explain to me that he had been plagued with a migraine headache at least once a month for the past 15 years. Then he said he had not had a migraine since he started treatment seven weeks ago. Since I treated the whole spine, not just the low back, he had not only experienced relief in his low back but he was also relieved of migraine headaches. I apologized to him. He asked why are you apologizing I feel great! I said Im sorry I didnt tell you sooner.

From that point on I realized that not everyone knows everything about chiropractic that I do. Do you think that patient will tell everyone he comes into contact with that has migraines about his chiropractor now? Definitely!

A good way to constantly remind patients of other conditions you treat is to expand a little about the area of the spine you are adjusting on them. If you are treating their low back ask them, do you have or have you ever had pain down the back of your leg? This is a good question to ask anyways. Whether they say yes or no, this is a great time to explain to them that you see a lot of patients with sciatica and that you can help anyone they might know with pain down the back of the legs. It has been my experience that most patients will say right then and there I do have a friend with that type of pain. The more people you are able to help the better.

Upper Back Pain - Identification And Some Useful Solutions

Posted on August 23rd, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

Upper Back Pain is as painful or troublesome as the pain in the lower back or the neck. An injury or a strain is the most common reason for the pain in the upper portion of our backs. Although back pain in upper portion is not a common phenomenon, it can cause significant discomfort and needs to be treated carefully. The identification of the exact cause is necessary to treat the pain in the upper back.

Muscular irritation and joint malfunction have been found to be the most common causes of upper back pain. An injury or a poor posture can also result in back pain. In recent years, it has been found that people sitting in one posture for example working in front of the computer are more prone to suffer from this type of back pain.

Lack of activity or poor strength of our muscles is a very common cause of upper back pain and can be treated through chiropractic cure, acupuncture, massage, physical therapy and various types of stretching exercises. Again an injury or strain in the joints between the ribs and the upper back can result in severe pain. Such a situation can be rectified by exercises aimed at strengthening the muscles and loosening the back. A ruptured disk or a degenerative disk disease can also result in back pain in upper part.

An appropriate posture and regular strengthening exercises are a must for avoiding the pain in the upper back. A poor posture can lead to weak muscles and a strain in our joints and ligaments and thus cause upper back pain. Osteoporosis, a disease which makes ones bones fragile and weak, a rupture in the spinal disk or any other form of injury can also result in back pain. People suffering from heart disease can also experience pain in the upper back. Such people need to consult a specialist so as to avoid any complexities.

It is important to get proper medical treatment if the cause of your upper back pain is Osteoporosis, a ruptured disk or any other injury. However, if the pain is caused by a poor posture or a strain, we can take some self remedial action such as massaging the area of pain. Pain in the Trapezius or the triangle shaped muscles of the upper back and the shoulder blades can be rectified through self massage or massage by somebody else. Also try to concentrate on improving your posture and sit straight instead of slouching.

A poor posture eliminates the natural, weight-supporting S curve in our backs and weakens them. In contrast a right posture- chest out, stomach in, and buttocks tucked under- helps one to restore the S curve in our back. Proper exercises can enable one to rectify his/her posture. Proper massage by a physical therapist, use of acupuncture techniques and physical therapy also go a long way in relieving upper back pain.

Herniated Disc Treatment Promotes Remedy And Relief

Posted on August 22nd, 2008 in Back Pain Clinic

Herniated disc treatment greatly varies from patient to patient and case to case basis. Treatments may either be aggressive or conservative. Though, the usual approach of a herniated disc treatment is to have it the moderate and non-invasive way. After the problem is diagnosed, usually, the patient will be advised to take on some rest. And eventually can return to normal routines. A few days off are much help already. The period of rest is to deflate the disc inflammation. But if it does not get any better with the non-invasive approach, then more advanced treatments will be administered.

A herniated disc treatment is basically to reduce the bulging disc and minimize the pain. Common practices of treatments are epidural steroid injections, physical therapies, muscle strengthening exercises, medications or prescriptive drugs, and surgery.

Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications as the form of herniated disc treatment is relatively safe. This can be done orally to alleviate the pain. Such drugs include Medrol Dose Pack, among others. The epidural injection is another direct approach. Some patients also are under the influence of muscle relaxant to help them control muscle spasms on the course of their treatment. For extreme pain, narcotics are prescribed. In whatever form of drugs you are taking, extra care is essential.

Another substantial herniated disc treatment is the physical therapy. This may not directly affect the afflicted disc but it sure can brace the muscles of the lumbar spine. This will significantly decrease the load and pressure suffered by the vertebrae and disc. Stronger muscles are needed to get hold of the lumbar spine and decreases nerve and disc injuries.

For neurologic components such as numbness and weakness, one herniated disc treatment needed may be surgery. Actually, surgery is preferred as the last resort if no other treatments work. But surgery is based depending on the condition and the patients health. Not all patients with herniated disc get to be advised for surgery.

Generally, a herniated disc treatment aims to provide comfort and ease despite the pain associated with a ruptured disc. Treatments are means to relieve the pain, numbness and weakness in the lower back and legs due to the compressed nerve root; prevent recurrence of injury; reduce chances of disability; and enhance the chances to resume normal life and activities.

Since the disc inflammation eventually returns to its normal state, herniated disc patients recover in less than a month or for more serious conditions, after six months. Only 10% of patients exhibiting unchanged symptoms after six weeks are considered to undergo surgery treatment.
